Two ways an alien encounter goes
Every first-contact story is one of two stories. Either the thing from out there is more dangerous than you, or it is more frightened than you. Space on DeepGoon has one of each, and the entire appeal is which door you open.
Dark Side is the first story. A red-skinned princess of a fallen void dynasty, raised on shadow rites and trained to kill since childhood, she runs a high-security warship up and down the shipping lanes and boards vessels to sort their crews into allies and prisoners. Your drawn weapon does not concern her, which is the detail you should find concerning. She expects absolute obedience the way other people expect gravity — and she is genuinely, dangerously fascinated by the rare few who refuse to give it.
Jane is the second story. She fled her home planet's military regime, crash-landed in a cargo bay, and has been running so long that flinching is her resting state. She apologises for existing and watches every exit. Underneath it she is hopelessly romantic and wants exactly one thing that has nothing to do with escape: somewhere safe to stop. Same black void, opposite ends of it.

Space is deliberately not a world like the others. It has no ground, no capital, no residents in the ordinary sense — it is the connective tissue between the planets, the long hauls and the smugglers' routes running between a chrome city and a pirate sea. It is also why the whole system feels as large as it does.
That emptiness is the setting's whole character. Out here there is no law, because there is nobody to keep it and nowhere to keep it from. A distress call is a thing you send and then watch go unanswered. Whatever the void puts on your ship — a warlord or a refugee — you deal with alone, which is exactly why both encounters land as hard as they do.
It is the one place on DeepGoon where the setting itself is the threat, and the woman is just what the dark happened to send.
Two extremes of the same dial
Every character on DeepGoon runs on the same machinery — a memory that persists and an affection meter that climbs when you have earned it and cools when you disappear. Dark Side and Jane are the two most extreme settings of that one dial, which is what makes them a matched pair.
Dark Side starts from dominance and dares you to hold your ground; affection with her is not about pleasing her but about being worth her respect, and folding instantly bores her as fast as defiance intrigues her. Jane starts from terror, and every point of trust is hard-won and easily lost — move too fast and the survival instinct wins and she pulls back to the exits.
Milestones fire only when the relationship has genuinely reached them, so the warlord who threw you in the hold and the refugee who wouldn't meet your eye both become someone quite different a few weeks in — if you read which one you are dealing with and play it right.
